Women in Leyton now have a gym space of their own. A new women-only gym opened at Leyton Leisure Centre on Tuesday 1 September, giving women a dedicated area to exercise inside the main leisure centre.
Operators GLL said the gym is designed to offer women "more choice, privacy and the confidence to get active". They added: "The new facility – which has been created within the main leisure centre – provides a welcoming, comfortable and private environment where women can work out in a setting designed specifically with them in mind."
The space has a range of cardio and strength equipment, including treadmills, bikes, cross trainers, spin bikes, free weights, leg press, leg extension, leg curl, shoulder press and chest press. Personal training sessions are also available.
Daniel O'Connor, partnership manager for Waltham Forest, said: "We want women to feel comfortable and confident using Better's leisure facilities, so we're really excited to open our first women-only gym."
He pointed out that the centre already runs fitness classes and women-only swimming sessions, and said the new gym is starting small on purpose: "We're deliberately starting with a focused offering so we can listen to the women using the space, understand what they want and make sure we invest in the right equipment and facilities."
The gym will grow in response to feedback from the women who use it, with further developments planned for November and December.
